About the Kitty Petty ADD/LD Institute
KPI was founded in June 1995 by Kitty Petty, whose interest was both familial and professional. After her grandson was diagnosed ADHD/LD in 1989, she vowed to help other parents identify these neurobiological syndromes as early as possible and obtain quality treatment. After retiring from 50 years in the legal profession and electronics industry, she founded the Mid-Peninsula CHADD Chapter in Palo Alto in February 1992, building it to be the largest chapter in the nation. Kitty obtained a BA degree in Secondary Education from the University of Southern California, and was a California Certified Paralegal.
Mission and Goals
Our mission is to provide education, resources and support to children, youth and adults with ADD/LD to become self-advocates and reach their true potential. Our goals are to provide the highest quality support services, referrals, and current research data to the ADD/LD community and those who care for them; to develop or co-sponsor community outreach projects and innovative education programs to help those experiencing the life altering effects of AD/HD and LD to maximize their strengths and minimize their limitations.
Achievements
In 1995 KPI was awarded a $150,000 grant from El Camino Hospital District Board to administer ADHD diagnostic research at Stanford Medical School, utilizing their fMRI and SPECT technology; the findings were published in the Nov. 24, 1998 proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
From 1995 through 2004, KPI's annual symposia have provided ADHD/LD education to the Bay Area, that have gained a reputation of excellence.
KPI's Database has grown to 5,500. KPI was sought out by Nippon TV Production Company to assist in the filming of an AD/HD documentary to reflect the positive, creative side of AD/HD among children; it is now a weekly series televised in Japan to help families accept and treat ADD/LD in their country.
KPI has assisted over 9,000 individuals and families all over the world via telephone, email, and through personal consultation. Kitty's dedication was unsurpassed by volunteering at least 80 hours per week providing compassionate encouragement and positive solutions through personalized service. In her 'spare time' Kitty has served on Santa Clara County Commissions, participated as an America's Promise Commitment Maker, and as a Project Y.E.A. volunteer for youth. She volunteered for the San Mateo County Juvenile Probation Department by providing ADHD education to parents of youth on probation.
